Profile of Institution

The Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) is the leading scientific establishment in the field of nondestructive testing for materials and parts in Republic of Belarus. JAP was founded in 1963 by the outstanding physicist, one of inventor of magnetic NDT method, laureate of Soviet Union's and Belarus's state prizes, Rockefeller's prize, Lomonosov's prize, an academician N. S. Akulov. From the very beginning, the Institute is directly involved in basic researches in the field of physics of nondestructive testing and magnetism, in development of new methods and testing devices for industrial use as well as in training and certification of specialists for NDT.

Now the Institute of Applied Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is the only academician institute both in the Republic Belarus and in Commonwealth of Independent States which mainly specializes in the physics of nondestructive testing. The high qualified staff of the Institute includes 120 scientific researches, among them there are 14 professors and 29 doctors of philosophy. The Institute is well-renowned for the results in development of principles of theory of magnetism, electromagnetic methods of testing, hydrodynamics of penetrants and magnetic liquids. More than 70 types of new means for nondestructive testing and information measuring systems for diagnostics in machine-building, energetics and the oil and chemical industry are designed by the researches of the Institute. The methods and devices are under protection of certificates and patents of developed countries.

IAP develops the following scientific directions: physical principles of testing the physical, mechanical, magnetic and electronic properties of materials and products (including multi-layers and inhomogeneities); physics of penetrant testing and acoustic methods of defectoscopy with using magnetic fluids; theory of nonlinear dynamic processes of remagnetization and non-uniform magnetizing of ferromagnetics; theory of systems with random and changing structure for solving the problems of diagnostics and safe control for dynamic objects; physics of computerized diagnostics of objects with inhomogeneous structure and internal stresses; physics of contact dynamic deformation.

The main applied tasks being solved at the Institute of Applied Physics are structures- copy, testing of hardness and other physical and mechanical properties of materials and products; detection of discontinuities of materials by various methods; thickness measurement of layers and materials; diagnostic of state for materials, products and dynamic system under exploitation and functioning.

 NDE ACTIVITIES

  1. Principal Mission of NDE Activities of IAP

  • Quantitative diagnostics and nondestructive testing. Supply of quantitative characteristics  of the objects under testing (sizes of cracks, mechanical parameters, machine service life, thickness of facing and others) in units of testing parameter for indirect measurements.

  •  Internal diagnostics and nondestructive testing. Simultaneous using some physical methods for testing allows to obtain new results in principle.

  • Active nondestructive testing and diagnostics. The results of testing use for correction the technological regimes in manufacturing, regimes of usage for complex industrial systems and mechanisms.

  • Active enhancement and application of penetrant, ultrasonic, magnetic, electromagnetic methods, development of new algorithms of data processing for nondestructive testing applied to solving of arisen problems in industry, transports medicine.

  1. Technological Environment

The Institute of Applied Physics of the National Academy of Sciences is the leading scientific establishment in Belarus which coordinates all basic researches in the field of non- destructive testing and engineering diagnostics. The Institute is the scientific leader and coordinator of the 5 Years State Program of basic researches "Diagnostics" which comprises 33 scientific projects in the field of nondestructive testing and engineering diagnostics. A scientific supervisor of the Program is professor P. P. Prokhorenko.

The Institute has direct contracts for development of new means for NDE both with big industrial enterprises of Belarus, Russia, Germany and with middle and small companies of Belarus. Main customers of the Institute's developments are engineering industries, enterprises of fuel and energetics complexes (pipelines, heat power plants etc.), chemical industries.

All of penetrant testing specialists in Belarus take a special training course at the Study Center affiliated with the Institute of Applied Physics in order to pass the certification in accordance with 1, 2 of 3  d level of qualification.

Furthermore, experts of the Institute offer permanent consulting help for industrial enterprises of Belarus in to solve problems in the field of nondestructive testing.

  1. Departments / Centers Involved in NDE

The Institute of Applied Physics comprises in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. There are 12 scientific research laboratories at the Institute such as of: metal physics; radio-wave methods of testing; electromagnetism; magnetic methods of testing; capillary phenomena; ultrasound; physics of electromagnetic losses; computerized diagnostics; magneto-dynamic methods of testing; contact dynamic methods of testing; adaptive control; computer modeling; and 2 scientific research groups of. eddy current crack detection ; physics of nonlinear waves. All laboratories and scientific groups have close connections with industrial enterprises and scientific organizations of Russia, Ukraine, Germany, USA, France, Poland and other countries.

The only Center for training services in penetrant inspection in Belarus works at the Institute.

 Besides 5 small scientific producing enterprises are organized and working at the Institute. The main task of them is development and production of special means for NDT basing on results of basic researches which are conducted at the laboratories.

  1. Educational Activities

a. Undergraduate

Unlike educational universities, IAP is a scientific research institute of the National Academy of Sciences. It is a reason the Institute does not conduct long-term learning of students. But the leading specialists of the Institute do lecturing for students of general engineering specialties on subjects of nondestructive testing as professors at corresponding departments of some universities. Courses of lectures delivered:

"Nondestructive testing of products" (48 hours)
"Modem methods of information processing" (48 hours) "Methods of nondestructive testing" (60 hours)

Practical classes on those courses are conducted at the Institute of Applied Physics of National Academy of Sciences. Besides 10-15 students of several universities take annually a undergraduate internship at the IAP NASB under supervising of Institute's professors for topics in the field of nondestructive testing with granting Bachelor and Master's degree.

b. Graduate

In the Institute the PhD course is delivered for four specialties in the field of nondestructive testing:

  • 05.02.11 - Methods of testing and diagnostics in engineering industries;

  • 05.11.13 - Devices and methods of testing of natural environment, materials and production;

  • 05.11.08 - Radio-metering devices;

  • 05.13.01 - Control in engineering systems.

During 3-4 years course of learning, young researches, graduated from universities, carry out experimental and theoretical researches. The final task of the researches is to submit and defend a thesis for PhD degree by one from 4 above-mentioned specialties. When studying the graduate students learn deeply and pass examinations on specialty, foreign language and computer modeling. Actually there are 23 graduate students at the Institute.

Besides there is a postdoctoral study at the Institute. Scientists who has PhD degree can prepare and defend a thesis for degree of Doctor of Science by one from 4 above- mentioned specialties. Actually there are 2 postdoctoral students at the Institute.

c.   Vocational Training

The Center for training services in penetrant inspection works at the Institute during the last 4 years. Its main goal is to learn the personal working in the field of penetrant inspection. The offered courses provide to the personal the training (50% theory and 50% hands-on) sufficient to be certified on corresponding level (I-st, 2-nd and 3-rd) . The Center is operated with Institute's equipment. 1-st level course numbers 24 hours and 2-nd - 40 hours. Annually about 80 specialists from over the country pass training at the Institute's Center.
