3. Profile of
Institution
Nanjing University (NU)
is a major research university of China, which was developed at
the bases of Shang-Jiang Normal School founded in 1902 and then
National Southeast University, National Central University, and
Jin-Ling University, etc. Recently, Nanjing University has
become one of the top five universities in China due to its
research and teaching activities. Now the university has 36
Departments including Liberal Arts, Technologies, Bio-Medical
Sciences, Geo-Sciences, International Business Managements,
etc.
The Institute of
Acoustics of Nanjing University (IANU) formally established in
1978 is the outgrowth of the Acoustics Faculty organized in 1954
under the leadership of Professor Rong-jue Wei, the former
Director of the Institute. IANU has engaged in acoustical
researches for more than 40 years. In the early of 60's, several
groups in the Institute have studied molecular, ultrasonic
propagation and attenuation in suspensions and solids including
superconductors in low temperature in experiment and theory.
Since the end of 70's, there have been six laboratories,
including physical acoustics, ultrasonics, SAW, environmental
acoustics, electro-acoustics and speach signal processing.
Recently, there are four main research fields of Nonlinear
Acoustics, photoacoustic science, interaction between ultrasound
and materials, and acoustic signal Processing. Now,
Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) has become one of the major
subjects in the research projects of IANU. Three aspects have
been included in NDE activites in the Institute:
(1) Photoacoustic
and photothermal, and laser ultrasonic characterizations.
(2).Linear and/or nonlinear ultrasonic propagation and
evaluation of materials.
(3).R & D of transducers and sensing.
NDE ACTIVITIES
1. Principal
Mission of NDE Activities
IANU has five
major objectives:
-
To study the
mechanisms of different NDE fields in theory and
experiment.
-
To persue research in NDE problems of industries and
transfer the advanced techniques to industrial applications.
-
To enhance NDE training of students in undergraduate and
graduate programs.
-
To apply
measurement methodology to other related areas, such as,
electrical, biomedical, and agricultural areas.
-
To drive the
activities for founding of the international and national
network to exchange NDE training programs, techniques, and
results, as well as applications to industries.
2. Technological
Environment
IANU is one of major
institutions engaging in acoustics research in China. The
institute is mainly supported by the Education Ministry and
Natural Science Foundation of China, and different government
organizations of Jiangsu Province. The institute is usually in
cooperation with other departments of the university, and other
universities, industrial institutions at home and abroad,
including technician training and manufacturing services.
3.
Departments/Centers Involved in NDE
IANU has strong ties
with the Department of Electronic Science and Engineering,
Department of Physics, and also has collaboration with
departments of material Sciences, Computer Sciences, Chemistry,
Geology, etc. The work of IANU is conducted by a mix of
faculties, graduate students and postdoctors, etc.
